COVID-19 And DMV DUI Classes

At The Chastaine Law Office we are doing everything we can to stay on top of the changing situation to keep everyone informed.  For up-to-the-minute information, please call our office and we can answer any questions. We are open and available during normal office hours, 9:00am to 5:00pm. We will do our best to keep updating this blog as things change.

Many people have had the challenge of not being able to enroll in their DUI classes.  Here is the most up to date information:

It is now possible to enroll in a DMV approved online DUI class.

All field offices for the DMV in the state of California are closed to the public.  They are working to take care of people online and through the mail.

In the past, any DUI classes had to be done by attending a course at a Safety Center.  Most Safety Centers in our region are closed, except for a few in Sacramento and Yolo counties.  Safety Centers in Placer and El Dorado counties remain closed.

While the shelter in place order by Governor Newson and CDC guidelines remain in effect, more business is being done online.  The Safety Center in Sacramento on Bradshaw road is doing just that; they are now offering DUI classes online.

If you visit their website at you can enroll in your DUI classes online.  Their website states this program meets the requirements for court-ordered DUI programs and programs required by the DMV.  A call to the Safety Center also confirmed this.

If the program is closed where you were required to enroll by the court, or your deadline to enroll is quickly approaching, these online classes will meet your needs.  You will be able to get your license back if you have your SR-22 insurance and Ignition Interlock Device (IID) with proof of the DUI class enrollment.

With proof of your SR-22, IID, and enrollment in your DUI class, you can mail those documents with a check for $125 to the DMV to get your license reinstated.   Remember, it is important that you keep a copy of those documents for your records and mail a copy to our office for our records.  The DMV address is:

Department of Motor Vehicles
PO Box 942890
Sacramento, CA 94290-0001

The DMV is not doing any in-person Administrative Per Se (APS) hearing at this time.  Most APS hearings have been pushed out until June.

With everyone required to stay at home, now would be the best time to enroll and complete these online DUI classes.  When the courts and DMV re-open there will be a backlog, so staying ahead of the game will be beneficial.
